چکیده

Societies are formed as collaborative structures to execute tasks which are not possible or are difficult for individuals alone. There are many types of biological societies formed by animals, but societies formed by machines or robots are still rare. This paper introduces the concept of an application oriented robot society formed by autonomous underwater robots. This bacterium robot society is a generic concept with many potential applications. As an example of such application we present a scenario, where robot society serves as a mobile distributed sensor instrument inside a process plant.

Biologically-Inspired Control for Multi-Agent Self-Adaptive Tasks

Decentralized agent groups typically require complex mechanisms to accomplish coordinated tasks. In contrast, biological systems can achieve intelligent group behaviors with each agent performing simple sensing and actions. We summarize our recent papers on a biologically-inspired control framework for multi-agent tasks that is based on a simple and iterative control law. We theoretically analy...

Modelling a Hormone-Inspired Controller for Individual- and Multi-Modular Robotic Systems

For all living organisms, the ability to regulate internal homeostasis is a crucial feature. This ability to control variables around a set point is found frequently in the physiological networks of single cells and of higher organisms. Also nutrient allocation and task selection in social insect colonies can be interpreted as homeostatic processes of a super-organism. And finally, also behavio...

A Context-aware Architecture for Mental Model Sharing through Semantic Movement in Intelligent Agents

Recent studies in multi-agent systems are paying increasingly more attention to the paradigm of designing intelligent agents with human inspired concepts. One of the main cognitive concepts driving the core of many recent approaches in multi agent systems is shared mental models. In this paper, we propose an architecture for sharing mental models based on a new concept called semantic movement....

Biologically Inspired Locomotion Strategies: Novel Ground Mobile Robots at RoMeLa

This paper presents some of the ground mobile robots under development at the Robotics and Mechanisms Laboratory (RoMeLa) at Virginia Tech that use biologically inspired novel locomotion strategies. By studying nature's models and then imitating or taking inspiration from these designs and processes, we apply and implement new ways for mobile robots to move. Unlike most ground mobile robots tha...

Miro: Middleware for Controlling Biologically Inspired Mobile Robots

The study of animal behavior has inspired many robotic designs. In general, there are two ways to design a biologically inspired robot: (1) incorporate powerful hardware into the robot, so it can internally process all tasks; and, (2) have a distributed architecture delegating timeconsuming processes to a remote computational server, allowing reduction of robot’s hardware complexity. There are ...
